Pelvic floor dysfunction encompasses a wide-range of problems associated with one or more of the three systems in the pelvic floor (the urinary system, genital system, and colorectal system).

Conditions Include:

  • Incontinence, urinary and fecal
  • Pelvic Pain, including pain with intercourse
  • Overactive Bladder Syndrome, including urinary frequency
  • Interstitial Cystitis
  • Bowel Dysfunction, including constipation
  • Vulvodynia
  • Coccydynia
  • SI Joint Dysfunction
  • Muscle dysfunction associated with reflexive inhibition of the pelvic floor and deep abdominal wall commonly found in postpartum women (even years after giving birth)

Conservative management is effective in treating many of these conditions that affect millions of Americans. However, it is not generally known that physical therapists are uniquely qualified to treat the functional or pain syndromes of the pelvic floor. The basic tenet of the physical therapy treatment plan is to improve the functioning of the pelvic floor by increasing the strength or decreasing the tone of the related tissues. Techniques include pelvic floor and deep abdominal wall muscle re-training, biofeedback therapy, and pelvic floor electrical stimulation.
