4-Phased Program

  1. Prehab – pre-op eval and treat


    1. Baseline Testing of ROM, Strength, Sensation, Functional Level (TUG, Berg Balance Scale), Cardiovascular Endurance (3-min or 6-min walk test, YMCA Step Test), Limb Girth Measurements, Posture Screening
    2. Educate regarding post-surgical Mobility Guidelines, Lymphedema Precautions, Lifting Precautions, Home Exercise Program, General Conditioning Guidelines, Nutrition Guidelines
    3. Prevention – combined ASTYM/MLD treatment (prophyllactically) (optional on the day before surgery)

  2. Rehab — Debilitation risk reduction throughout the first year of treatment


    1. Post-op Testing of ROM, Strength, Sensation, Functional Level (TUG, Berg Balance Scale), Cardiovascular Endurance (3-min or 6-min walk test), Posture Screening, Incision Inspection, Pain Scale, Fatigue Scale, Depression Scale
    2. Review post-surgical Mobility Guidelines, Lymphedema Precautions, Lifting Precautions, Home Exercise Program, General Conditioning Guidelines (tHR), Nutrition Guidelines
    3. Treatment to include progressive ROM, strength, and cardiovascular endurance; posture and movement awareness training; augmented soft tissue mobilization (ASTYM) to address any soft tissue restrictions; pain modalities as needed; MLD/CDT for lymphedema management; progressive return-to-function.
    4. Transition from Rehab to Aftercare – 4 visits with personal trainer

  3. Aftercare — Development of individualized aftercare programs emphasizing ongoing disease management and wellness 1-5 years after diagnosis; re-integration into community fitness programs; follow-up visits with physical therapist in conjunction with oncologist check-up visits


  4. Survivor Care — Some physical aftereffects of cancer treatment may not happen until years after treatment ends. A progressive and ongoing physical rehabilitation plan can enhance the quality of your life at any time during your survivorship.
